Your hosts, Bruce and Mandy Berry, welcome you to our web site. On this page you will find general information about the Red Lion at Kenninghall. Follow the links to find more detailed information and pictures of our menus, guest rooms, and events.

The Red Lion had been closed for approximately seven years before being re-opened in February 1997 following our extensive refurbishment. The work included the restoration of the original fireplaces and one of the main features of the pub; the "snug" which is one of only two of its kind in East Anglia.

During the refurbishment extensive research revealed that the building was originally three cottages, one of which was an "Ale House". Hot pokers used to mull the ale caused telltale burn marks in the bressumer over the dining room fireplace.

We believe the main building to be approximately 400 years old and the premises have been licensed since 1722.

Further refurbishment included the addition of bed and breakfast accommodation in the former stables and butcher's shop adjacent to the main building.

The Red Lion features in the CAMRA good beer guide. During 2000 we were voted Norfolk and Norwich CAMRA branch pub of the year. This followed being voted Pub of the Trail in the CAMRA winter ale trail, and we also came third in the East Anglian Pub of the year. During 1999 Bruce Berry, your landlord, was awarded the Cask Marque Certificate of Excellence for the outstanding quality of the range of cask ales served. In July 2001, Norfolk and Norwich CAMRA voted the Red Lion to be the County Mild Pub of the year. More recently in September 2006 Greene King Brewing Company named us as East Anglian Pub of the year. In September 2007 we were named Greene King's Free Trade National Community Pub of the Year.

Our restaurant boasts a range of traditional fare as well as chargrilled steaks and fish, and a constantly changing specials board. As all our food is freshly prepared and cooked individually to order, you may experience a delay of approximately 30 minutes.

There are more than 6000 pubs in East Anglia but less than 2% have escaped drastic alterations in recent times. The Regional Inventory of Pub Interiors of Special Historic Interest in East Anglia is part of CAMRA's pioneering initiative for bringing greater recognition and protection to the nation's most historic pubs.

The Red Lion sits in the middle of East and West Church Streets Kenninghall, a conservation area noted for historic buildings and charm. Kenninghall is near to Banham Zoo, Bressingham Steam Museum and Garden centre, Snetterton Race Track, and to the market towns of Diss and Thetford. Kenninghall sits approximately 20 to 22 miles south of Norwich, and 20 miles north of Bury St Edmunds.
